Evergreen Policy: Release Maintenance

This policy defines the Evergreen development team's support policy for Evergreen release branches. Our goal is to offer the most stable release with the most available features to our user community.

Maintenance Schedule

The Evergreen development team shall support the last two concurrent minor releases ("supported releases"). "Support" is defined as fixing bugs that are reported and which can be reproduced in the supported releases.

Per release version naming, in Evergreen 2.0 and beyond, the second digit in the release name identifies the minor release. Prior to Evergreen 2.0, the third digit in the release name identifies the minor release.

Maintenance Schedule Examples

When Evergreen 2.0.0 is released, the supported releases shall be 2.0.0 and the latest available release in the 1.6.x series. No further support shall be offered for the 1.4.x series of releases.

When Evergreen 2.1.0 is released, the supported releases shall be 2.1.0 and the latest available release in the 2.0.x series. No further support shall be offered for the 1.6.x series of releases.

If the currently available versions of Evergreen are 2.0.1 and 1.6.1.5:

  • A bug that is reported and reproduced in Evergreen 1.6.1.5 will normally be fixed and released in a subsequent 1.6.1.6 release. If the bug is reproduced in 2.0.1, then the bug shall also be fixed and released in a subsequent 2.0.2 release.
  • A bug that is reported in Evergreen 1.4.0.7 (not a release from "maintenance branch") which has not been reproduced on 1.6.1.5 or 2.0.1 will not be fixed. The fix is to upgrade to a supported release.
  • A bug that is reported in Evergreen 1.6.0.5 (not a release from "maintenance branch") which has not been reproduced on 1.6.1.5 or 2.0.1 will not be fixed. The fix is to upgrade to a supported release.

Maintenance Schedule Rationale

The pace of development is rapid, there are a limited number of Evergreen developers, and there is great demand for additional features. Providing support for two minor releases while creating new features in the development branch represents a significant work load for the development team.
