Background on Evergreen Project

Evergreen is an open-source integrated library system developed by the Georgia Public Library Service to support 252 public libraries in the Public Information Network for Electronic Services (PINES) consortium. PINES completely transitioned to Evergreen in September 2006. Evergreen is now used by approximately 1,300 libraries around the world. It offers the following functionality for libraries:

  • a metadata search engine (e.g. author, title, subject);
  • a transaction processing engine (e.g. checkin, checkout, place request);
  • a web application;
  • a fund management system.

In September 2013, the Evergreen developer community agreed to move to a web-based client to support staff use of the system. Currently, staff use a XULRunner application built on the XULRunner platform. Several Evergreen sites have contracted with Equinox Software, Inc. to build a prototype of the new web client. More information about that project can be found at http://blog.esilibrary.com/2013/10/15/hacking-away-a-web-based-staff-client/.

Since the project is moving to a new client, the community is seeking user interface expertise, particularly those with experience in workplace applications where repetitive tasks are performed, to recommends some improvements to the most-heavily used staff interfaces in Evergreen.
