Philosophies for tracking money
Two extremes for managing funding source allocations, funding sources, and funds.
The one-to-one philosophy
- Money from a given external source that has a spending deadline, goes into its own funding source.
- A fund only receives money from 1 funding source (no multiple funding-source inheritance).
- Typically, this means a new set of funding sources each year.
- The funding source is the "root" of the money, not the individual credits into the funding source
The multiverse philosophy
- Money with different spending deadlines may be part of the same funding source
- Funds receive money from multiple funding sources
- The funding source credit is the "root" of all money and tracks the spending deadline
