This is an old revision of the document!

Philosophies for tracking money

Two extremes for managing funding source allocations, funding sources, and funds.

  • The one-to-one philosophy
    • Money from a given external source that has a spending deadline, goes into its own funding source.
    • A fund only receives money from 1 funding source (no multiple funding-source inheritance).
    • Typically, this means a new set of funding sources each year.
    • The funding source is the "root" of the money, not the individual credits into the funding source
  • The multiverse philosophy
    • Money with different spending deadlines may be part of the same funding source
    • Funds receive money from multiple funding sources
    • The funding source credit is the "root" of all money and tracks the spending deadline
